The bicycle ferry on the Flensburg Fjord starts in May

The ‘Friends of the Bicycle Ferry’ association is starting the summer season this year on 17 May. The bicycle ferry ‘Thjalfe’ will initially start with trips at weekends and then connect Langballigau on the German side with Egernsund in Denmark every day

After a record 7500 passengers from around 40 countries last year, the association is also looking forward to welcoming many tourists with or without bicycles on board the ‘Thjalfe’ in the 2025 season. ‘We are well prepared for the new season and recommend that all interested passengers plan their tour well in advance,’ says captain and ship owner Palle Heinrich. The tour with the bicycle ferry can already be booked via the German and Danish-language website https://cykelfaergen.info/ or via Facebook https://www.facebook.com/cykelfargen/. Palle Heinrich currently assumes that the bicycle ferry will operate until mid-September. The exact dates will be announced on the website in good time.

The route of the ‘Thjalfe’ runs from Langballigau on the German side via the Danish landing stages at Brunsnæs and Marina Minde to Egernsund. ‘We use our second bicycle ferry ‘Rødsand’ for charter trips on the Flensburg Fjord,’ says Palle Heinrich. Both ferries are authorised to carry 12 passengers and 12 bicycles. Depending on the weather, the journey can be spent inside the ferries or in the fresh sea air on deck. There is plenty of space for passengers and their bikes and the varied fjord landscape makes the crossing a special experience.

The bicycle ferry has a direct connection to the Gendarme Trail, where Danish gendarmes used to patrol against smugglers. Many hikers and cyclists are drawn to one of Denmark's most beautiful coastal hiking trails on their excursions along the northern shore of the Flensburg Fjord. From Padborg, the charming Gendarme Trail runs along the waterfront for 84 kilometres through a landscape shaped by nature and history to Skovby on the island of Als. International tourists are also increasingly discovering this hiking route. In December 2024, the European Hiking Federation (ERA) once again recognised the Gendarme Trail as a ‘Leading Quality Trail-Best of Europe’.

For the German-Danish members of the Friends of the Bicycle Ferry Association, who have been successfully operating a bicycle ferry on the Flensburg Fjord between Germany

and Denmark on a voluntary basis since 2019, receiving the ‘Initiative Award 2025’ from the Destination Sønderjylland tourism organisation is a great honour. Kirsten Oldenborg Lundvang, Director of Destination Sønderjylland, presented the award to Gerhard Jacobsen, Chairman of the Friends of the Bicycle Ferry Association, in April. ‘We are delighted to receive this award, which recognises our joint commitment to establishing and operating a cross-border ferry service on the Flensburg Fjord. The bicycle ferry has created a new tourist attraction on both sides of the fjord and is also an example of excellent cooperation,’ said Gerhard Jacobsen. At the award ceremony, Kirsten Oldenborg Lundvang pointed out that the bicycle ferry also sends a positive signal for the successful development of regional tourism. The members of the association make an impressive contribution with their voluntary work. Gerhard Jacobsen emphasised: ‘From the very beginning, our guiding principle was always to create more than just a means of transport. With great joy and commitment, we want to strengthen regional ties and connect people across borders. The success of the bicycle ferry is an example of what we can achieve together when volunteer work and local support go hand in hand.’

The ‘Friends of the Bicycle Ferry’ association is still looking for more volunteers who would like to get involved on board or ashore to look after the guests, give them suggestions for tourist attractions in the area and take on smaller tasks. ‘We speak Danish and German with each other and are looking for interested people from both sides of the Flensburg Fjord who would like to help us with accompanying passengers and other tasks. We are happy to invite interested parties to join us on one of our trips with the ‘Thjalfe’,’ says Gerhard Jacobsen.
